You’re never too old to learn something new. Once you cross the threshold of being over 40, a few things take place, 1. You realize there is so much more to learn and experience 2. You’re not in your 30s anymore, and 3. It doesn’t really matter.
Here are some things you should know about life after 40.
If you haven’t started already, start pampering yourself.
You’ve been in this body too long to not treat it to a nice massage, mani-pedi, or facial. Take yourself out for a date, go watch a movie, or watch a movie at home in your comfy clothes and order your favorite food. Learn how to treat yourself.
Start or continue a healthy lifestyle.
This only benefits your body as it continues to age. The truth is, you’re metabolism is not as fast as it used to be. The more you learn about your body in this new stage, the more you can adjust your lifestyle to align with the healthy and fulfilling life you want to live. Some good tips are to be mindful of your diet, aware of your sleeping and eating habits and maintain low-stress levels. Don’t forget to move your body and stretch!
Take Care of Your Skin
Small improvements can make a big difference. Adding collagen peptides to your smoothies, coffee, and food can help to improve the firmness of your skin and repair any damage (please consult with your doctor if you have any underlying health risks). Sunscreen, yes, even now. The sun does not stop shining and your skin shouldn’t have to suffer from that. Sunscreen is good, there are also plenty of options to help keep your skin moisturized. Developing a skincare routine becomes necessary at this age.
Get regular check-ups
Going to the doctor is a thing that you just do now. You want to be healthy and you want to make sure everything is functioning now. Also, knowing your family history when they were in these stages of life, helps too.
Do what is best for your mental health
If you can’t go to every single event, it doesn’t matter. What matters is what keeps you calm and smiling. Self-reflection is a must at this stage because now you are able to reflect back on many years and many experiences and learn something from them. So take a pause and go on a nice walk, clear your head whenever you need it.
Have a Financial Plan
Retirement can be close if you are not already in it and making sure you have your bases covered, only protects you from unnecessary stress. Really take a good look at your assets, liabilities, 401(k) plan, savings, investments, and anything else you need to see where you are at. Become financially educated if you are not already.
You no longer sweat the small stuff
Things that used to really irritate you in your 20s and 30s, now just seem to roll off your shoulder. You realize that life is much too valuable to waste it worrying on things that serve no purpose in your life. If you still are sweating the small stuff, take a minute after every time you get frustrated and ask yourself, “Is this really going to affect me next week?”, and 9/10 times it won’t.
Just breathe.
This time of life is quite enjoyable, you’re right in the sweet spot to know, be wise, and responsible enough to make the right decisions but also still young to learn new things and new perspectives.
Go out and live your best life during this time. Don’t worry, you got this. 💋
