5 Things You Should Know Before Booking Your Photographer
Choosing a photographer can be a big task! You’re trusting someone to capture special moments for the rest of your life. It’s not something that should be taken lightly when there is a specific moment you want to be captured. And photographers, take this seriously.
What is your photoshoot for?
Be clear about this. What kind of shoot are you going for? Professional headshots? Glamour? Maternity? Make sure you know this first and communicate this with your photographer. And, does this photographer do the kind of shoot that you’re looking for? Are they experienced with this style? For example, if you are wanting a maternity shoot, photographers experienced in this genre will have a wardrobe full of dresses and fabrics for these shoots, saving you time and money. Knowing the kind of photos you want, is the foundation of your shoot. This will help your photographer know how to plan it perfectly, for you.
2. Does the photographer fit your “vibe”?
Before you book, meet with your photographer, in-person. This is the best way to see how comfortable you feel with them and how you get along. This will also help your photographer tailor the shoot to you and your personality, you also want to see their portfolio and see if their style of photography matches with what you like and the tone you want in your photos. Does the photographer have a studio or do they do outdoor work? If you decide to do a boudoir or maternity shoot, having the privacy of a studio is important.
3. When are you wanting photos done?
This is a MAJOR thing to know because maybe the photographer is booked during the time you want it. Keep in mind that photographers need to know quite a bit in advance so they can put it on their calendar too. Think about the shoot you want and when the perfect timing for that shoot will be. Is there wiggle room in case the photographer is booked during your ideal time? Consider this when you are thinking about the shoot you want.
4. How is communication with the photographer?
Now you have an idea of what you want and choosing the time to do it, how is the photographer communicating with you? Are they following up with you? What is their consultation process like? Think about the type of dynamic you want to build with your photographer and how accommodating they are. Communication is a huge key when preparing for a photo shoot and the time leading up to it can be stressful, it makes it easier when you can talk to your photographer and when they can talk to you.
5. What is your budget?
Probably the most important one of all. How much are you wanting to invest in your photoshoot? Know this first, then shop around. See who is in your budget with the style and photos that you like. Many photographers have an inquiry section on their website or you can send them a message through social media. Be mindful that many photographers invest their time and energy into every shoot they do, you’re paying for quality and service.
